Latam Airlines informed Thursday that it will cancel most of its international flights to and from Chile following the government’s announcement to close the borders amid the increase in coronavirus cases.

Chilean health authorities announced the closure of borders for the entire month of April in the face of record numbers of new cases of covid-19, which are occurring in parallel to the successful progress of the vaccination campaign.

The airline said that “scheduled flights” from April 5, the date on which the border closure comes into effect, will be cancelled and that it will operate at “reduced capacity to maintain the country’s connectivity”, reported AFP.
“Latam will maintain a reduced operation during the period of this restriction to allow the repatriation of residents or citizens or for foreigners who wish to leave Chile”, said through a statement on the only exception determined by the Chilean Executive to be able to fly to the southern country.
The airline added that affected passengers will be able to change their tickets free of charge.
