Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced Friday the construction of a new airport in Tulum with the capacity to receive four million passengers as part of the work on the Mayan Train.

“Here, as the Cancun Airport is so full, the construction of a new airport here in Tulum will begin, with the capacity to receive four million tourists,” said Lopez Obrador in his daily press conference known as ‘la mañanera’.

The President did not offer specific dates for the project, although he did state that construction work on the airport would begin soon. He also did not specify the investment earmarked for the new terminal area.

The President expects the Mayan Train megaproject, which will run 1,500 kilometers through the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, to be completed in 2023.
