Germany’s leading airline Lufthansa had to cancel several intercontinental flights because too many pilots fell ill, a spokesman for the airline told AFP Thursday.
“Transatlantic links to North America bound for Boston, Houston and Washington are mainly affected from December 23 to 26 following an increase in the number of sick” among pilots, this spokesman said.

The link of the sick people to the omicron variant of covid-19 is “speculative” as Lufthansa is not informed of the type of illness contracted by the pilots, this source added.
Scandinavian airline SAS reported Wednesday that a higher-than-normal number of sick staff, due to covid and associated health advisories, has contributed to the airline’s recent wave of flight cancellations.
