Wizz Air will start direct flights on 20 routes between Saudi Arabia and various European cities from December, the airline said at a press conference on Thursday.

The new flights will connect the Saudi capital and major cities such as Jeddah and Dammam with European destinations such as Bucharest, Budapest, Milan, Naples, Rome, Venice and Vienna.

Wizz Air suspends resumption of its flights between Abu Dhabi and Moscow.

“We are not targeting any of the existing carriers, legacy carriers or low-cost carriers in Saudi Arabia,” CEO Jozsef Varadi said in an interview. “We would like to add value above them. I believe that the choices of the competition are good for the market, because they create alternatives”.

Budapest-based Wizz Air has benefited from recent growth fueled by its low-cost model, at a time when many traditional carriers have been crippled by the pandemic.

Saudi Arabia said in June that it would encourage airlines to fly into the country from major world cities in a bid to boost tourism.
