Government closes purchase of Mexicana Airlines brand

The Federal Government agreed this Friday to purchase the Mexicana de Aviación brand with the airline’s workers’ unions through an agreement for 816 million 786 thousand 335 pesos.

With this, the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador intends to create an airline run by retired members of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).

Sources still meeting at the Ministry of Labor told El Financiero that the agreement has already been signed, although some points remain to be defined, such as the date on which the resources for the airline’s workers will be dispersed.

However, the sale of the brand still has a couple of obstacles:

The conformation of a trust that presents legal problems that have not been resolved and that, therefore, would prevent the sale of three other properties.

Next Monday, the authority will proceed with the lifting of the awards that were in force in favor of the airline’s workers. Once the legal obstacles have been removed, the sale and purchase agreement will become effective and the Government will agree with the unions the date for the dispersion of the resources.

Mexicana de Aviación was the largest airline in Latin America, but in 2010 it ceased operations after mismanagement by its owner, Gastón Azcárraga, who left the country after the airline’s bankruptcy.
