Japan Airlines (JAL) is close to placing an order for more than 20 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to renew its medium-haul fleet, industry sources said Wednesday.
JAL confirmed it was in talks to buy new planes, but declined to comment further.
“We are still in the negotiation phase, so we can’t give details,” a JAL spokesman said when asked about an earlier report published by Bloomberg on the deal.

The order will likely consist of a combination of Boeing’s MAX 8 and MAX 10 aircraft, according to the report, which added that the airline is also in talks with Airbus.
JAL’s purchase of the MAX would be the second by one of Japan’s major airlines, after All Nippon Airways (ANA), in a domestic market traditionally dominated by Boeing.
