American Airlines and JetSmart begin their codeshare agreement

American Airlines and JetSmart on Monday officially launched their strategic alliance for the sale of codeshare flights between the United States and Chile.

The agreement includes a broad network of codeshare routes, as well as medium-term access for JetSmart customers to American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program.

This alliance contemplates a minority investment by American in JetSmart, which will contribute to boosting the company’s development in South America.

The sale of tickets to and from the United States – and American’s extensive worldwide network – initially connecting to routes in Chile (Santiago, Antofagasta, Concepción and Puerto Montt) is the first stage of the agreement that will link the U.S. airline’s global presence with JetSmart’s complementary network of 77 routes in South America.

Ticket sales began last Thursday, June 1 for flights between the United States and Chile with a June 15 start date and can be booked through American’s website.

New codeshare routes will be made available to travelers from other regions of Chile and Peru in the coming weeks.

Additional codeshare routes will be added in Argentina once government approval is obtained.

The AAdvantage loyalty program, which JetSmart expects to join later this year, will allow customers of both airlines to benefit from special offers, promotions and passenger mileage accrual in several South American markets. The alliance will enable customers to earn more travel rewards and use their miles to access new destinations and exclusive benefits around the world.

“American has established strategic partnerships with airlines around the world to offer our valued customers a wide range of options to meet their needs, whether they are traveling for business, leisure or a combination of both,” said Scott Laurence, American’s Senior Vice President of Alliances Strategy.

“The alliance with JetSmart will enable American to expand its long-haul service between the United States and Latin America, giving access to our flights, our network and the AAdvantage travel rewards program to more travelers in South America,” concluded the American airline spokesperson.

“From the beginning, we have been innovating in the industry, with ultra-low fares and new routes. Today we announce another step in this revolution, as we make history with the launch of this alliance between JetSmart and American Airlines. Our customers will be able to fly on the JetSmart network, earn miles and connect to the American Airlines global network. As the fastest growing airline in South America, this alliance strengthens us and positions us to achieve our vision of reaching 100 million passengers and 100 aircraft by 2028,” said Estuardo Ortiz, President and CEO of JetSmart.
