Sydney Airport inaugurates new T1 arrivals area
Sydney Airport officially opened the new international arrivals area in T1 on Friday.
The project is part of the Airport’s Master Plan 2039, which focuses on providing an enhanced traveler experience.
Construction of the new area began in November 2021, with the use of sustainable materials and the selection of native trees, plants, groundcovers and lawns, with many species endemic to the area.

International arrivals area of T1 in figures
- 12,200+ native plants (45 different species)
- 3,000+ sqm of new green space
- 10,000 sqm of new paving
- 8,500 sqm of new roof sheeting
- 160+ new LED lights
- 31 new seating benches, 8 tables and 32 chairs
“International passengers are now greeted with a vibrant new arrivals area that showcases the natural beauty Sydney is known for,” said Sydney Airport General Manager Geoff Culbert.
“When construction began in 2021, the Australian border was still firmly closed and our international terminal was a ghost town, but we pressed on knowing that recovery would come
“International travel is booming again, with more than 7 million passengers likely to pass through our new arrivals area this year alone, and millions more in the coming years,” Culbert added.
The new area is just one of many major projects being undertaken to increase capacity and improve the passenger experience. Over the next five years, Sydney Airport will invest nearly $3 billion in projects across the precinct.
