Panama’s Copa Airlines held last Friday, International Day of the Aeronautical Maintenance Technician, its annual “Maintenance Masters” skills competition, which brought together 60 participants, including aeronautical technicians from the airline and students from the Academic School of Aeronautical Technicians (ATA), distributed in 12 teams that faced different challenges designed to test their knowledge and skills in aircraft maintenance.
“For Copa Airlines, this is an opportunity to celebrate the talent, dedication and passion of our maintenance professionals, who are fundamental to ensuring the safety and reliability of our operations. Without a doubt, this competition demonstrates that Panama has the talent and ability to compete in the global aviation industry. We congratulate all the participants and the rest of the more than 600 aviation mechanics who are part of the airline and ATA on their day; we also congratulate the winners of this competition who demonstrated that in Panama we can achieve the challenges we set ourselves,” said Rafael Samudio, vice president of Technical Operations for Copa Airlines.

Throughout the day, each of the participating teams competed in 11 competitions of 15 minutes each, in which they simulated real daily work scenarios and demonstrated their skills, speed and ability to solve problems and challenges, meeting the time and quality standards required by the airline and national and international authorities.
Two of the participating teams were young people from Copa Airlines’ Aeronautical Technicians Academy (ATA), highlighting emerging talent in Panama.
Through ATA, the airline prepares, at no cost to the student, Panamanian labor qualified in maintenance and inspection of aeronautical systems, following the highest quality standards, and provides opportunities for growth and professional development within the compan
At the end of the day, the Heavy Team, formed by Mario Rosas (Captain), Rene Paredes, Francisco Platero, Julius Medina and Andy Fernandez, was the champion of the “Copa Airlines Maintenance Masters 2024”, demonstrating exceptional skill, knowledge and teamwork.
Winners received prizes sponsored by companies such as Milwaukee, Zulu Global, Boeing, Laats and Barfield.
