Air China confirmed the purchase of 100 COMAC C919 aircraft, the domestically developed airliner with which the Asian giant wants to compete with the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
In a statement sent last night to the Hong Kong stock exchange – where it is listed – the company confirmed the agreement and specified that these 100 aircraft will be delivered in batches between 2024 and 2031 by the Chinese state-owned manufacturer.
This aircraft, designed to directly rival the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, is China’s big bet in the aeronautical sector, as it enters the narrow-body segment, which currently accounts for more than half of the world’s commercial aircraft.

The C919, which took more than 14 years to develop, made its first commercial flight in May 2023, operated by state-owned China Eastern, to which the first four units have been delivered and have already carried thousands of passengers on routes linking Shanghai with Chengdu and Beijing.
This aircraft can accommodate between 158 and 192 seats and has a range of between 4,075 and 5,555 kilometers. The aim of the Chinese authorities is for it to achieve a 10% share of the country’s commercial aviation market by 2025, having already received more than a thousand orders, mainly from airlines of the Asian giant.
In addition, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) advanced earlier this year that it will “promote” international recognition of the C919 with the aim of obtaining certifications from bodies such as the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Last year COMAC stated that its goal is to achieve an annual production of some 150 of these aircraft over the next five years.
