Spanish airline Volotea and Abra, a Latin American group to which companies such as Avianca and Gol belong, announced a Joint Venture to jointly develop commercial and operational opportunities.

Thanks to the complementary short-haul operation of Volotea and the long-haul and intra-Americas operation of the Abra Group airlines, the alliance is a comprehensive solution that positions itself as the best alternative to act as a “remedy taker” in the merger between IAG and Air Europa, offering European and Latin American travelers more alternatives at better prices.

This strategic agreement proposes to facilitate short and long-haul connections and strengthen the connectivity of Spain with Europe, America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world. The solution proposed by both companies is an efficient and flexible proposal that will ensure the arrival of passengers to the Madrid hub through Volotea and from the different bases and cities in which this company operates in Europe and the Middle East, allowing access to intercontinental flights marketed by the airlines of the Abra Group, and to its networks in America and the Caribbean.

This alliance, which is presented as a clear and competitive alternative, guarantees an improved and high quality service, which will favor the consolidation of Madrid as a hub for connecting air routes at national, international and intercontinental level, and will contribute to strengthen the positioning of Spain as a destination. In addition, this measure will allow Madrid to have another operator that guarantees competition on routes to and from the Americas, attracting passengers from Europe to Latin America, North America and the Caribbean and boosting tourism in the other direction.

Marketing will be carried out through various distribution channels, ensuring wide dissemination and access to the services offered, with more than 30 destinations in Europe and more than 130 in the Americas.

“We are delighted to announce today this historic and landmark Joint Venture agreement between our two companies. Grupo Abra, with Avianca and Gol Airlines, is one of the two leading groups in Latin America, and adding their strength to our network of more than 450 routes in Europe will provide great opportunities for all European and Latin American consumers,” said Carlos Muñoz, CEO and founder of Volotea.

Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of the Abra Group, said: “The joint venture we are presenting today is a differential solution that will benefit millions of travelers with an expanded network, a unified product, a quality service and competitive prices.

Volotea closed last year with a turnover of 694 million euros, 24.6% higher than the previous year. Looking ahead to 2024, turnover is expected to exceed 800 million euros and will become the most profitable year in the history of the company, which expects to transport some 12 million passengers, offering more than 450 routes in 18 European countries.

Grupo Abra transports more than 62 million passengers a year with a fleet of more than 250 aircraft – single-aisle, twin-aisle and freighters – connecting to more than 130 destinations in more than 25 countries in the Americas and Europe, with an annual turnover of more than 8 billion euros.
