Avianca, the only airline that connects Colombia directly and nonstop with the United Kingdom, celebrates the first 10 years of operation of the iconic Bogota-London route.
The first flight took off from El Dorado International Airport in Bogota on July 3, 2014, bound for Heathrow, one of London’s four major airports. The route was flown on an Airbus A330 with 227 passengers and 13 crew members on board.
Since 2014, more than 1.2 million people have flown between the two destinations, thanks to this operation. The results and consolidation of the Bogota-London route were undoubtedly boosted by the lifting of the visa requirement for Colombian and Peruvian citizens to enter British territory as of October 2022.
“We are very proud to celebrate 10 years connecting Latin America and the United Kingdom directly through Bogota, which is our home. We look forward to many more decades to celebrate, to continue making it possible for more and more people to fly to London and also for more and more travelers in Europe to visit our region,” said David Alemán, Avianca’s Sales Director for Colombia and South America.
→ Avianca to resume seasonal flights between Medellin and Orlando
Today, Avianca customers have seven weekly frequencies between Bogota and London and this is one of the seven routes and more than 50 weekly flights that the company offers to connect to and from Europe, in addition to: Madrid-Bogota, Madrid-Medellin, Madrid-Cali, Madrid-San Salvador, Barcelona-Bogota and most recently, Bogota-Paris.
Thus, in addition to its operations in the Americas, Avianca offers travelers more than 140 routes connecting to more than 75 destinations in more than 25 countries.
Business Class, a renewed experience with Avianca Insignia
Avianca’s flights on the Bogota-London-Bogota routes are operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, one of the most modern in the world.
Traveling in Business Class from Bogota, airline customers can enjoy preparations by chefs Álvaro Clavijo and Catalina Vélez. In addition, all flights include an amenity kit with collectible cases designed by Colombian accessories brand Mola Sasa, made in collaboration with the Gunadule indigenous community, and products from Loto del Sur.
Avianca Cargo contributes to trade between Latin America and Europe
In its 10 years of operation, Avianca Cargo has consolidated its presence in Europe with the direct Bogota-London route, transporting various types of cargo in the bellies of the passenger aircraft that serve the seven weekly frequencies, with a total capacity of 70 tons per week.
This route has been fundamental not only for the Colombian market, but also for the region, connecting countries such as Ecuador, Honduras and Peru with the United Kingdom, and facilitating the transportation of key products such as flowers, fish and fruit. In 2023, Avianca Cargo moved more than 2,600 tons of cargo to London, and during the first half of this year, more than 1,600 tons of cargo have already been transported.
