The Three-runway System (3RS) at Hong Kong International Airport was commissioned Thursday, marking a new milestone in Hong Kong’s aviation development.
All three runways start operating simultaneously today, providing the expanded capacity for airport to further strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a major international aviation hub. Target is to serve 120 million passengers and handle 10 million tonnes of cargo annually in about 10 years from now.

“The 3RS will significantly enhance the overall capacity of the airport, further expanding our extensive air traffic network and consolidating our position as an international aviation hub. The commissioning of the 3RS will provide impetus for the Airport City development and support Hong Kong’s economic growth”, Fred Lam, Chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong said.
Construction works of 3RS started in August 2016. The new North Runway was officially commissioned in November 2022. Since then, airport has continued to operate with two runways, with the Centre Runway temporarily closed temporarily for reconfiguration.
These reconfiguration works included the leveling of the runway pavement to link with the connecting taxiways and the construction of new taxiways.
