Peru’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Raul Perez Reyes, announced on Thursday the rescheduling of the start of operations of the new terminal of Jorge Chavez International Airport, which serves Lima, for January 29, 2025, one day before the maximum term set forth in the concession contract.

At a press conference, Perez Reyes said that after discussions with the operating company Lima Airport Partners (LAP) on the best date to start operations, it was decided that it would be January 29, at 06.00 local time, which is the time of least number of flights at the international terminal.

WHAT WILL THE TRANSFER PROCESS BE LIKE?

The transfer process from the old terminal to the new one will begin at zero hours on January 29, said the minister after having maintained for months that it would begin on December 18, a date that generated criticism due to the high passenger traffic.

Perez Reyes defended the new date for the start of operations of the new Lima airport so that “all the actors are ready” and that the things that are required are “totally resolved”.

Among the main issues under discussion was the access to the new air terminal, in an area close to the old Jorge Chavez, since the bridges and land access roads foreseen in the original project have not been built on time.

In this regard, the minister reported on a series of works, such as the installation of temporary bridges, the opening of avenues and new public transport bus routes to facilitate the entry and exit of passengers and workers.

The ministry will also hire police officers on their days off to reinforce security on the airport’s access roads, since the current terminal handles some 20,000 workers and 85,000 passengers per day.

RESCHEDULED DELIVERY DATE AT LIMA AIRPORT

LAP’s general manager, Juan José Salmón, stated at the press conference that the operations start date has been rescheduled for January 29, within the terms of the concession contract, which has a deadline of January 30, 2025.

He hoped that in the next few weeks they will be able to sign the agreements with the public transportation companies that will provide services at the new airport.

Salmón clarified that there is no bonus in the contract associated with a December start-up.

NEW TERMINAL WILL CREATE 121,000 JOBS

By 2025, the new Lima airport terminal will generate 121,000 direct and indirect jobs, and is the second largest transportation investment in the country at US$2.4 billion, according to Salmón.

“With the commitment to position Callao and Lima as a business, service and transit hub in the region,” said the LAP manager.

Salmón added that the rescheduling does not mean that they will “lighten” efforts for the start of the work, which currently employs 13,000 workers, reported EFE.
