Icelandair and Southwest sign strategic partnership agreement

Icelandair and Southwest Airlines signed a strategic agreement Wednesday that promises to transform the traveler experience. This collaboration will enable customers to easily connect between both airlines’ networks, opening new travel opportunities across North America and Europe.

The Context of the Partnership

Southwest Airlines taking a historic step by choosing Icelandair as its first airline partner. This agreement not only marks a milestone in Southwest’s history but also strengthens Icelandair’s position as a key bridge between North America and Europe.

Last year, the two airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding designating Baltimore as the first connecting airport. Now, with the announcement of two additional points—Nashville and Denver—the partnership significantly expands its reach, offering smoother and more convenient connections.

Benefits for Customers

Starting in February, passengers will be able to enjoy an extensive network of destinations. Icelandair travelers will have seamless connections through Baltimore to Southwest’s North American network. Similarly, Southwest customers will gain access to Icelandair’s European and Icelandic destinations.

Connections from Nashville and Denver will begin in the summer.

This partnership will open new and exciting connections for our customers onwards with Southwest to numerous destinations in North America, while their customers will benefit from our extensive connections to Iceland and Europe”, Tómas Ingason, Chief Commercial Officer of Icelandair said.

Ryan Green, Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer at Southwest Airlines, also expressed: “It’s fitting for us to launch this chapter of industry-standard airline partnerships with our longtime friends, Icelandair. Beyond an ability to offer each other’s Customers access to new destinations and like-minded travel experiences centered around hospitality and value, we’re grateful to have been guided by their expertise and best practices in building our program.”
