The iconic Lockheed L-1649A “Super Star” is back in the spotlight thanks to the meticulous work of Lufthansa Technik. This jewel of the skies, a symbol of luxury and innovation in the 1950s, has been restored and unveiled to the public in an event that thrilled aviation enthusiasts.
The History of the Super Star in Lufthansa
In 1957, the Lockheed Super Star joined Lufthansa’s fleet, marking a turning point in transatlantic flights. This aircraft, capable of nonstop flights between Europe and New York, was a technical marvel with its four piston engines and its ability to cross the Atlantic in flights lasting up to 17 hours. Additionally, it was the first aircraft to offer the exclusive Senator class, raising the bar for air travel standards of the time.
Its main operations and maintenance were conducted in Hamburg, the same city where Lufthansa Technik’s technical team has restored this model to its former glory.
A Meticulous Restoration Process
In October 2023, the fuselage, wings, the iconic triple tail stabilizer, and 292 wooden crates of parts were precisely assembled in Hamburg. The restoration of the Super Star not only features an impressive exterior but also a fully functional cockpit, faithful to the 1950s design. The controls, lighting, and mechanical systems such as rudders and flaps were designed to be completely operational, highlighting the technical expertise of that era.

However, the Super Star’s journey doesn’t end here. After its recent roll-out, the aircraft will be disassembled again into larger segments and transported to Münster/Osnabrück Airport in July 2024. There, it will be repainted in Lufthansa’s original design from the “Parabola” era.
A Vintage Interior with Modern Technology
The cabin design combines nostalgic elements with modern amenities. The seats, sourced from a Lufthansa Airbus A340, have been redesigned and upholstered in wine-red leather, while the carpets and curtains replicate historical patterns from the 1950s. This balance between past and present ensures a unique experience that remains true to the spirit of the era.
Frankfurt: The Final Destination
In October, the Super Star will be moved to Frankfurt, where it will become the centerpiece of Lufthansa Group’s new conference and visitor center. Alongside the legendary Junkers Ju 52 D-AQUI, it will form part of an exhibit opening in the spring of 2026 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Lufthansa. A glass façade will allow both aircraft to be visible from the outside, making this space a true sanctuary for aviation enthusiasts.
The restoration of the Lockheed Super Star is not only a tribute to engineering and innovation but also a reminder of Lufthansa’s rich history in commercial aviation. This project combines passion, dedication, and technology to keep the memory of a golden era of the skies alive.
