Heathrow Airport Breaks Records in January: Passenger and Cargo Growth

Heathrow Airport has started the year 2025 with historic figures, solidifying its position as the UK’s primary air hub. During January, more than 6.3 million passengers passed through its terminals, representing a 5.4% increase compared to the same month last year.

Continuous Growth in Air Traffic

This January marked the eleventh consecutive month in which Heathrow welcomed over 200,000 daily passengers. A key factor in this growth has been the increase in transatlantic flights, with 1.2 million passengers traveling between the UK and the United States, an 8% rise compared to 2024.

Air Cargo: Heathrow Boosts UK Trade

In January 2025, Heathrow handled nearly 120,000 tons of cargo, double that of all other UK airports combined. This figure reinforces its role as a key port for British trade and investment.

Breakdown of Cargo Transport:

North America: 48,739 tons (+17.2%)
Latin America: 4,306 tons (+2.5%)
Middle East: 20,367 tons (-11.4%)
Asia-Pacific: 30,591 tons (-1.7%)
Total: 119,330 tons (+0.5%)

As part of its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience, Heathrow recently inaugurated The Windsor by Heathrow, a renovated private terminal, marking the first step in transforming its renowned VIP offering.

Expansion and Future of the Airport

The UK government has shown its support for the airport’s expansion, including the construction of a third runway. However, for this project to materialize, changes in regulation, modernization of airspace, and reforms in planning policy are needed.

Thomas Woldbye, CEO of Heathrow, stated: “2025 has started just as we expected: with record-breaking passenger numbers and a boost to trade and investment across the UK. To maintain this growth, we will work with the government to implement the necessary policies for our expansion.”
