The low-cost aviation giant, Ryanair, announced on Wednesday that it will delay its transition to 100% electronic boarding passes until November 3, 2025.

The airline will completely eliminate paper boarding passes, moving to a fully digital system through its “myRyanair” app.

A Digital Transformation for the Passenger Experience

With this transition, travelers will no longer need to print their boarding passes. Instead, they will generate and use them directly from the app during the check-in process. Currently, nearly 80% of Ryanair’s 200 million annual passengers already use this digital feature.

With this full implementation, the airline expects to eliminate almost all airport check-in fees, as all passengers will be required to complete the process online or through the app.

Environmental Impact: Paper Waste Reduction

In addition to enhancing the user experience, the complete digitalization of boarding will lead to a significant reduction in paper waste. Ryanair estimates that this initiative will save over 300 tons of paper each year, thereby contributing to the reduction of the company’s and its passengers’ carbon footprint.

Benefits of the “myRyanair” App

The change not only brings ecological benefits but also improves the travel experience by offering various functionalities in the app, especially in situations involving disruptions or last-minute changes. Among the advantages of the platform are:

  • New in-seat ordering function, allowing passengers to request products and receive priority service.
  • Real-time flight information with direct updates.
  • Direct notifications from Ryanair’s operations center in case of disruptions.
  • Updates on terminal status, boarding gates, and boarding process.
  • Alternative flight options in case of incidents.
  • Centralized storage of travel documents for greater convenience and accessibility.

“Ryanair is the number one airline in Europe in terms of options, low fares, and customer service. This transition to 100% digital boarding passes starting November 2025 will enhance the traveler experience, providing real-time updates from our operations center, offering alternative flight options, and even accommodation if necessary,” said Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Marketing Director.

Brady also highlighted the global trend toward digitalization, referencing industries such as concerts, sporting events, and the railway sector, where digital tickets have become the norm. With nearly 80% of its passengers already using the app, Ryanair aims to have the rest of its customers join this digital transition.

Toward a Future with 300 Million Passengers

This move is part of Ryanair’s ambitious growth plan, which projects reaching 300 million passengers in the next decade. The digitalization of boarding is part of a series of strategic initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, reducing costs, and providing a smoother and more sustainable travel experience.

With the full implementation of this policy starting November 2025, the airline aligns itself with industry trends, optimizing its operations and committing to sustainability, while delivering a more agile and efficient service to its passengers.
