Edelweiss has marked a historic milestone with the introduction of the Airbus A350 into its fleet. This Tuesday, the Swiss airline celebrated the aircraft’s first commercial flight from Zurich Airport to Tenerife. The inauguration ceremony featured the traditional ribbon-cutting, attended by Edelweiss’s entire board of directors and airport authorities.
A Special Welcome for Passengers
The event was significant not only for the airline but also for the 307 passengers on this historic flight. Each traveler was greeted with a glass of champagne to kick off the journey in style. Additionally, every seat featured a commemorative “Remove before 1st Flight” tag and a plaque engraved with the seat number—a unique keepsake to remember the occasion.

Before takeoff, Bernd Bauer, CEO of Edelweiss, expressed his excitement: “Today is a historic day for Edelweiss. Not only are we operating the first scheduled flight of a Swiss airline with an Airbus A350, but we are also sending a clear signal about our future. This aircraft is one of the most advanced and efficient in its category, marking a milestone in our journey toward more responsible air tourism.”
The flight departed punctually at 11:15 a.m. from Zurich to Tenerife, ushering in a new era for Edelweiss.
First Routes
In its first phase, the Airbus A350 will operate short- and medium-haul routes to familiarize crews with the new model. Scheduled destinations include Tenerife, Faro, Ibiza, Heraklion, Palma de Mallorca, and Antalya.
Starting May 15, 2025, Edelweiss will deploy the A350 on long-haul flights, beginning with the route to Las Vegas. This strategy aims to position the airline as a modern and sustainable choice for leisure travelers.
The addition of the Airbus A350 underscores Edelweiss’s commitment to innovation and efficiency, setting new standards for Swiss commercial aviation.
