Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Safran for the acquisition of innovative Z400 economy-class seats, which will equip its eight Boeing 777-9 aircraft. This significant agreement was finalized during the International Aircraft Exhibition in Hamburg and underscores the airline’s modernization strategy.
Scheduled Deliveries and Specifications of the New Seats
The delivery of these eight Boeing 777-9 aircraft is scheduled for mid-2027. Each plane will feature 383 economy-class seats, reflecting Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to fleet expansion and enhanced passenger experience.
Designed specifically for long-haul flights, Safran’s Z400 seats offer a notable advancement in onboard entertainment with their 13-inch screens—a significant upgrade from the previous 11.6-inch models. Additionally, these seats are 12.5% lighter compared to the prior generation, thanks to an optimized structure with fewer components and advanced lightweight materials. This weight reduction translates to greater operational efficiency and sustainability.
