ITA Airways has received official approval to start its integration process into Star Alliance, following the green light from the alliance’s Executive Board. This decision, which comes after its incorporation into the Lufthansa Group earlier this year, paves the way for its entry into the world’s largest airline alliance.

Estimated Date

The integration of ITA Airways into Star Alliance is expected to be completed by early 2026. Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO of Star Alliance, emphasized the significance of this step: “Our Executive Board’s decision underscores the strong confidence our members have in ITA Airways. As Italy’s gateway, its inclusion strengthens our global network, enabling more connected travel for passengers worldwide.”

Joerg Eberhart, CEO and General Director of ITA Airways, added: “We are thrilled to join Star Alliance and bring the excellence of ‘Made in Italy’ to the alliance, expanding its global reach. This is a significant milestone in ITA Airways’ growth, and we look forward to offering our customers the benefits of the world’s largest airline network.”

Impact on Connectivity and Star Alliance’s Network

With its integration, ITA Airways will contribute 360 daily flights to Star Alliance’s network, reinforcing its presence in Europe. Its main hubs, Rome and Milan, already serve operations for 16 alliance members, which will further enhance connectivity options.

The Lufthansa Group, with a strong track record within Star Alliance, is sponsoring ITA Airways in this process. Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, stated: “I am proud that ITA Airways will become the fifth Lufthansa Group airline to join Star Alliance. As mentors in this process, we will ensure a smooth and swift integration. ITA Airways’ future membership will offer Star Alliance customers new opportunities to plan their trips with greater flexibility. I am confident it will be an excellent addition to the alliance’s portfolio.”

Expansion and Benefits for Travelers

Once the integration is complete, Star Alliance will have 26 member airlines, offering over 18,000 daily flights to 192 countries. This will expand passenger options, with enhanced benefits such as mileage accrual, VIP lounge access, and a more seamless global travel experience.

This move solidifies ITA Airways’ position as a key player in the commercial aviation sector, strengthening its role within the Lufthansa Group and boosting its offerings in the European and international markets.
