United Airlines announced this Thursday a significant 20% increase in its operations at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in 2025, reinforcing its strategy to establish the airport as a key global hub. Since 2019, its capacity has grown by 6%, and with this latest expansion, it will surpass 2024 levels by 20%.
Sustained Growth and New International Routes
United will operate approximately 300 daily flights from SFO this summer, the highest number since 2019. Currently, the airline connects San Francisco with 111 cities worldwide and has added 11 new international destinations and 9 domestic ones over the past four years, including:
- New service to San José, Costa Rica, and Panama City starting next month.
- New routes to Belize and Monterrey, Mexico.
- Expanded flights to Cancún, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta.

“Our network strategy sets us apart and strengthens our position as the largest airline in the world,” said Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines.
Expansion in Asia, Europe, and Pacific
United also leads in West Coast connections to Asia and the Pacific. By 2025, its San Francisco hub will offer 4.5 times more seats on flights to the region than any other U.S. airline. New additions include:
- New connections to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City via Hong Kong.
- Seasonal service between Adelaide and San Francisco starting in December.
- A second daily, year-round flight to Manila.
In Europe, United is the only U.S. airline operating flights from San Francisco, with up to 11 daily flights to 8 cities. The seasonal route to Barcelona, launched in 2024, will have an extended season this summer. Additionally, the airline will introduce a new service to Rome and a third daily summer flight to London Heathrow.
Investment in Infrastructure and Employment
As part of its growth in San Francisco, United is a key player in the airport’s Terminal 3 modernization project, a $2.6 billion investment set for completion in 2029. The renovation includes:
- Expanded boarding gates for larger aircraft.
- New United ClubSM lounges.
- Innovations in check-in and security areas.
- An additional 200,000 square feet for retail and dining.
Furthermore, the airline created over 1,600 jobs in 2024 and plans to hire an additional 1,200 employees in 2025.
