Saudi Arabia is on the verge of finalizing orders for Airbus jets worth billions of dollars, a strategic move aimed at balancing its suppliers and keeping pace with the rapid growth of the Gulf’s aviation sector, according to industry sources.

AviLease Positions Itself as a Global Player

The leasing firm AviLease, which recently placed an order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to the region this month, is now looking to expand its portfolio with Airbus jets. Sources indicate that the company may announce a comparable purchase of A320neo models at the upcoming Paris Air Show.

AviLease’s growth has been remarkable. With clear ambitions to position itself among the world’s top aircraft lessors, the company is also considering the acquisition of Airbus A350 freighters, as noted by individuals familiar with the negotiations.

Riyadh Air Leans Toward Airbus A350 Over Delayed Boeing 777X

Meanwhile, the new airline Riyadh Air appears to favor the Airbus A350 over the delayed Boeing 777X. While the decision has yet to be officially confirmed, it could be announced at one of the industry trade fairs scheduled for this year.

A potential deal with Airbus for Riyadh Air could involve up to 50 A350 aircraft, as reported by Bloomberg. This move would mark a significant step in the country’s efforts to establish its new airline as a key player in long-haul routes.

Although no final agreements have been reached, Riyadh Air has reiterated that it is evaluating options for wide-body aircraft purchases. “A decision will be made in the coming months,” an airline spokesperson stated.

Saudi Arabia is focused on modernizing and expanding its aviation infrastructure, and these strategic purchasing decisions underscore its intent to compete directly with the aviation giants of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
