Virgin Atlantic has unveiled the “Red Spirit Retreat” in London, a scientifically designed sensory experience that captures the excitement and energy of embarking on a holiday. This pioneering initiative combines technology, wellness, and the airline’s signature style to offer a preview of the pleasure of flying with the company.

An Experience Designed for Those Dreaming of Escaping Routine

The launch responds to the growing desire among Brits to reconnect with the feeling of travel. Recent data shows that 49% have yet to plan their 2025 vacations, while 44% claim they urgently need a getaway abroad. The “Red Spirit Retreat” is a direct response to this need for disconnection and renewal.

Pre-Flight Wellness: The Key Lies in Red Light Therapy

In collaboration with wellness coach Adrienne Adhami, the experience offers visitors a revitalizing combination of services typical of a Virgin Atlantic flight. This includes pre-“flight” drinks and snacks served by the iconic cabin crew, all within a space styled like a Clubhouse bar.

The highlight is a 10-minute red light therapy session, conducted in a Premium seat. This treatment uses wavelengths between 630 and 700 nanometers to boost mood, improve circulation, and promote restorative sleep—a technology experts say helps replicate the sense of well-being we experience when starting a journey.

Virgin Atlantic Engages All the Senses

Beyond light therapy, the experience stimulates other senses to reinforce an emotional connection with travel. Visitors hear the distinctive sound of an aircraft engine—which 22% cite as the strongest emotional trigger before a vacation—and enjoy fragrances evocative of iconic destinations:

  • Coconut, paying homage to Caribbean islands like Barbados and Jamaica.
  • Saffron, inspired by the street markets of Mumbai.
  • Roasted coffee, reminiscent of New York’s cafés.

These scents awaken memories for nearly half of Brits (47%), who say certain smells instantly transport them to their best vacations.

A Campaign That Travels Across London

The installation is located at Observation Point, but Virgin Atlantic took the experience even further. Cabin crew members and potential travelers were spotted wearing infrared facial masks at iconic London landmarks like Westminster Bridge, Millennium Bridge, and Trafalgar Square.

For those who couldn’t attend the main event, similar treatments are available at select Virgin Atlantic Holidays stores in Merry Hill, Trafford Centre, Bluewater, Meadowhall, Lakeside, Liverpool, and Chelmsford, starting today.

More Than an Airline: A Way to Travel

Virgin Atlantic leaves nothing to chance. According to their data, interactions with their crew evoke feelings of comfort (45%), well-being (41%), and happiness (28%). It’s this attention to detail and emotional care that makes the airline far more than just a mode of transport.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson stated: “Flying with Virgin Atlantic is an exciting and energizing experience—from our charismatic crew to the unique touches we offer onboard. The Red Spirit Retreat gives Londoners a mood boost and a taste of what it means to fly with us before they experience it on their next trip.”

Ongoing Promotions

This event is part of a series of initiatives by Virgin Atlantic to foster an open and curious travel spirit. Last month, they surprised five passengers on Bond Street with an unexpected trip to New York after an encounter with the crew.

Additionally, the airline’s special flight and holiday sale is now active, running until June 2, 2025. As an extra perk, Virgin Atlantic Holidays customers who are Flying Club members can enjoy complimentary access to the #1 Lounge in Heathrow’s Terminal 3 before their flight.
