Etihad Airways and Air Europa have operated their first wet-lease flight between Abu Dhabi and Madrid. This service not only marks Air Europa’s first operation from the Middle East but also solidifies a strategic alliance poised to redefine air connectivity between Europe and the United Arab Emirates.
A Flight That Marks a Turning Point
The service, operated with an Air Europa Boeing 787-9, departed Abu Dhabi for Madrid, featuring a configuration of 32 Business Class seats and 307 in Economy Class. This flight is part of an expanded codeshare agreement between the two airlines, enabling deeper cooperation in operations and frequent flyer programs.
A Strategic Agreement Beyond Routes
The partnership between Etihad and Air Europa enhances flight frequencies between Abu Dhabi and the Spanish capital, with the Emirati airline currently offering two daily flights to Madrid. This advancement responds to the growing market demand between Spain and the UAE.
Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, celebrated the milestone, stating: “Today begins a new chapter in our relationship with Air Europa. This collaboration demonstrates how Etihad can work with strategic partners to strengthen our Madrid route and offer travelers more options between the UAE and Spain.”
For his part, Juan José Hidalgo, President of Air Europa, added: “Partnering with Etihad Airways to launch our first service from the Middle East is a milestone for Air Europa. It allows us to better serve the growing demand between Spain and the UAE. Abu Dhabi is a world-class destination and an excellent platform for our expansion.”
Beyond the Flight: A Global Network for the Modern Traveler
The synergy between the two companies not only expands their joint services but also grants passengers access to over 130 destinations through their combined networks. This enhanced connectivity reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a pivotal hub for both tourism and business travel.
This inaugural wet-lease flight lays the groundwork for deeper cooperation between Etihad and Air Europa. Both airlines have expressed their intent to explore new joint commercial initiatives and expand bilateral efforts. Their shared goal: to provide travelers with more alternatives, better connections, and a seamless, efficient service experience.
