Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) launched its nonstop flights between Copenhagen and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, this Friday. This operation marks the return of a route that had been suspended for over two decades, reinforcing Copenhagen’s role as Scandinavia’s primary international hub.
The reopening of this route not only represents a milestone in SAS’s network expansion but also responds to the growing interest in Greenland as an emerging destination. National Geographic recently included it in its 2025 “Best of the World” list, recognizing its value as a meeting point between extreme nature and cultural richness.
A Gateway to the Arctic
For SAS, Nuuk becomes a unique destination in its route network: an Arctic city with limited access and untapped tourism potential. The airline aims to offer its customers a distinct experience, centered on pristine landscapes, authentic local traditions, and an environment that invites reflection and discovery.

The launch coincides with the opening of Nuuk’s new international airport, a key infrastructure project for the island’s connectivity growth. SAS developed this operation in close collaboration with local partners like Air Greenland, highlighting a strategic cooperative approach at every stage of the project.
Flight Schedule and Frequencies
The new route will operate three times a week during the summer season, with the following schedule (local time):
- Copenhagen → Nuuk
Monday & Wednesday: 09:00
Friday: 12:15
- Nuuk → Copenhagen
Monday & Wednesday: 11:05
Friday: 14:20
Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS, emphasized that this route reflects the company’s long-term vision: “Our goal is to be a resilient, adaptable, and collaborative airline. Whether for family, work, or exploration, we want to facilitate purposeful travel, grounded in respect and responsibility. And as the world’s most punctual airline, we take pride in offering that reliability on a route as significant as this one.”
This new link enhances Greenland’s connectivity and strengthens Copenhagen’s position as Northern Europe’s premier hub. The city expands its ability to connect travelers from around the world to Scandinavia—and now to one of the planet’s most enigmatic and remote regions.
