Maurici Lucena, Chairman and CEO of Aena, presented the expansion plan for Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport this Friday at Malaga City Hall to local authorities, including Mayor Francisco de la Torre and the President of the Provincial Council, Francisco Salado.
Unprecedented Expansion: Over 75% Increase in Surface Area
The project includes the works under the Airport Regulation Document DORA III, with construction set to begin in 2027. The cornerstone of the plan is the expansion of the terminal area, which will grow from 80,000 to 140,000 square meters. This transformation involves the demolition of the old Terminal 1 and current Piers B and C to make way for a modern, functional, and passenger-focused infrastructure.
Comprehensive Terminal Modernization
Among the most notable improvements is the construction of a new pier for non-Schengen flights, featuring a centralized border control system. Additionally, contact stands will be expanded to enhance airline operations, and the baggage handling system will be redesigned for optimal efficiency.
For passengers, the changes will be tangible from arrival to boarding:
- The security checkpoint area will increase by 112%.
- Passport control for departures will multiply by more than five, with a 515% growth.
- The non-Schengen/flexible waiting and boarding area will expand by 381%.
- The space allocated for Schengen flights will grow by 126%.
- Commercial areas will gain 41% more space.
- VIP lounges will increase their area by 43%.
Taxiways and Access Roads Also Evolving
Alongside the terminal expansion, new taxiways will be built to improve aircraft circulation. The current runways have sufficient capacity, but optimizing ground movements will enable more efficient operations.
Outside the airport, plans include the redevelopment and improvement of access roads, as well as increased parking capacity and more effective management.
A Model of Sustainability and Connectivity
Lucena emphasized that all actions will adhere to the most stringent environmental standards, preserving the natural surroundings. Aena remains committed to efficient connectivity, high safety levels, service quality, and sustainability—all while maintaining competitive airport fees for airlines.
With this ambitious plan, Aena reinforces its commitment to Malaga and Andalusia as strategic hubs for commercial aviation, preparing the airport for a future of greater connectivity, sustainability, and international competitiveness.
