Dominican Republic: Construction Begins on a Modern Terminal at Las Américas Airport
This Wednesday, Dominican President Luis Abinader inaugurated the construction of a modern passenger terminal at the Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez (AILA), with an investment of $250 million. This project aims to expand the airport’s capacity and transform the traveler experience, solidifying its role as a regional benchmark due to its modern design, functionality, and focus on sustainability.
Cutting-Edge Design and Technology
The new terminal building will be developed across three levels and will incorporate state-of-the-art technology to optimize operational efficiency. Spanning 33,000 square meters and featuring 10 boarding gates, the infrastructure will accommodate up to 4 million additional passengers per year.
The Minister of Public Works and Chairman of the Airport Commission, Eduardo Estrella, emphasized that this initiative will significantly boost tourism and benefit nearby communities by streamlining arrival and departure processes.
Tourism Minister David Collado noted that AILA had not undergone a project of this scale since 1956.

Infrastructure and Services for a World-Class Airport
Aerodom’s General Director, Mónika Infante, stated that this project is a historic milestone for the country’s airport infrastructure, highlighting the government’s commitment to driving tourism growth, improving air connectivity, and enhancing the passenger experience.
Key features of the new terminal include:
- Arrivals area with an automated baggage handling system and four conveyor belts.
- Departures area with 38 check-in counters, four security lanes, and two VIP lounges.
- Boarding gates with 10 positions, spacious waiting areas, and upgraded commercial and dining options.
- Aircraft apron capable of handling up to 13 planes simultaneously.
- 900 new vehicle parking spaces.
This megaproject positions Las Américas International Airport as a modern, efficient, and competitive gateway in the region, strengthening tourism and the Dominican Republic’s economy.
