LATAM Airlines Group has announced the incorporation of Apple’s item-tracking feature using AirTag and accessories from the “Find My” network, marking a new advancement in the travel experience. This tool will allow passengers to privately and securely report the location of their luggage directly to the airline, improving recovery efficiency.

“Although we transport over 40 million pieces of baggage annually and maintain loss rates 50% below the global average, we understand that any delay in delivery is critical for the customer,” said Paulo Miranda, Vice President of Customers at LATAM. “This new functionality not only provides peace of mind but also reinforces our commitment to smart, passenger-centric technological solutions.”

How Tracking with AirTag and Find My Works

The process for sharing location is simple. If baggage is delayed, the traveler can generate a link from the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This link is then entered into the delayed baggage report via SITA’s self-service website, enabling LATAM to locate the luggage within minutes.

The feature leverages Apple’s global “Find My” network, which consists of over a billion devices using Bluetooth technology to detect lost items and report their approximate location to the owner. The entire process is end-to-end encrypted and anonymous, ensuring that neither Apple nor accessory manufacturers can access the data.

Location sharing automatically ends once the bag is found or, in any case, after seven days. Customers can also stop it at any time.

“Delivering safer and more efficient travel through new technologies is part of our DNA,” emphasized Shawn Gregor, President of SITA Americas. According to the SITA Baggage IT Insights report, the baggage mishandling rate in Latin America and the Caribbean dropped by nearly 15% in 2024 thanks to investments in smart technology. With air traffic on the rise, this collaboration with AirTags and SITA WorldTracer® represents a key step in optimizing the travel experience.
