Norwegian group announced this Friday an agreement with Boeing to acquire thirty 737-8 aircraft, a deal that marks its first direct order with the American manufacturer since 2017. With this addition, the airline’s total order for 737 MAX models reaches 80 units, solidifying its commitment to modernizing and expanding its operations on the continent.

Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, emphasized that this order, secured “on attractive terms, ensures the growth of our fleet in a way that supports our expansion and sustainability objectives.” He explained that by exercising options and adjusting the delivery schedule, the company maintains flexibility while reinforcing its commitment to operating one of the most modern and efficient fleets in Europe.

The executive also underscored that the new aircraft will not only reduce emissions but also enhance the passenger travel experience.

A Strong Relationship with Boeing

Norwegian has a long-standing history with Boeing, dating back to its first order for 737-800 aircraft in 2007. In 2017, it became the first airline on the continent to receive the 737 MAX and also to operate the 737-8 model on transatlantic routes between Europe and the United States.

In 2022, the airline restructured its order portfolio, reaffirming its commitment to 50 737-8 aircraft and leaving options open for 30 additional ones, which have now been confirmed.

Brad McMullen, Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing at Boeing, highlighted Norwegian’s performance in recent years, describing its network, business model, and strategy as “impressive.” He stated that this new agreement will allow the airline to bolster its ambition of being the preferred carrier in Scandinavia, with the capacity to expand throughout Europe and beyond.
