Lufthansa Airlines will commemorate 100 years of operations in 2026 with a unique design that will adorn one of its new Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Starting in December, this aircraft will feature a livery that blends tradition and modernity, making it a global ambassador for the airline’s identity.
The design features a blue fuselage topped by the iconic white crane, a symbol originally created in 1918 by graphic designer and architect Otto Firle. In this version, the bird’s wings blend seamlessly with those of the aircraft itself, creating a novel visual effect that conveys movement and elegance.
Details of the Commemorative Design
In addition to the prominent crane, the aircraft incorporates direct references to the anniversary. The number “100” appears on the left side, while the inscription “1926 / 2026” is displayed on the right side. A special logo with the same number has also been painted on the lower fuselage, reinforcing the centenary message from every possible angle.
Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, emphasized the importance of the symbol and what it represents for the company: “Our crane stands for safety, pioneering spirit, premium quality, but also for freedom and reliability. This has been true for the past 100 years and will remain so in the future. We are proud of our tradition and our values, and we look forward to continuing our great story. The special livery on the Boeing 787 honors our identity and also represents the proud team of Lufthansa employees who give their all every day for the safety and well-being of our guests.”

Boeing 787-9 D-ABPU, a Global Ambassador
The aircraft chosen to debut this livery is the Boeing 787-9 with registration D-ABPU, which received its design in Charleston, USA. Official delivery to Lufthansa is scheduled for November in Frankfurt, with its interior configured to the Allegris standard.
Starting in December, the aircraft will enter the airline’s regular operations, flying to international destinations and carrying the centenary message to every continent. It will be, in the company’s own words, a true flying ambassador reflecting the history, innovation, and values that have defined Lufthansa for a century.
