Alfonso Bonilla Aragón Airport, located in Palmira and serving Cali, will be the first to implement state-of-the-art technology in air navigation procedures, thanks to an agreement between Colombia’s Civil Aviation Authority (Aeronáutica Civil de Colombia), Avianca, and Airbus. This cooperation marks a milestone for the country by promoting safer and more efficient operations.

Satellite Precision for Greater Safety and Connectivity

The modernization includes the introduction of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN), a system that will allow aircraft to fly with greater precision. This innovation will reduce operational risks, cancellations, and diversions caused by weather or geographical conditions.

The benefit for passengers will be immediate: more flights available, both day and night, and an air network with greater connectivity.

Colombian Civil Aviation Authority Takes Control of Alfonso Bonilla Aragón Airport

Brigadier General (Ret.) José Henry Pinto Rodríguez, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority, highlighted the relevance of this alliance: “Every day we work with hundreds of professionals across all departments of the country, who train and apply their knowledge in various tasks within the Civil Aviation Authority with the purpose of protecting lives. That is why having the endorsement of Europe’s most important industry leader such as Airbus, along with the tireless work of Avianca, allows us to recognize that better technologies mean better conditions for civil aviation.”

Role of Each Partner

  • Airbus: will contribute its expertise in validations and the development of advanced technology, supported by state-of-the-art simulators.
  • Avianca: will make its pilots, simulators, and test flights available to implement the new procedures.
  • Aerocivil: will be responsible for coordinating the approval and publication of the routes, ensuring they comply with international standards.

Impact on Colombian Aviation

This joint effort represents a firm step toward safer, more modern, and reliable aviation in Colombia. The project strengthens air connectivity and directly benefits millions of travelers passing through the country each year.
