Virgin Atlantic Selects Boeing to Enable High-Speed Wi-Fi Across Its 787 Fleet

Virgin Atlantic and Boeing have reached an agreement to implement connectivity upgrades across the airline’s entire 787 Dreamliner fleet. The goal is to provide passengers with a superior onboard internet experience, capable of streaming and featuring low latency.

Home-Level Connectivity

The announcement was made during MRO Europe, the region’s premier aviation maintenance and services event. Under the agreement, Boeing will perform structural and system modifications on Virgin Atlantic’s 787s to enable the installation of the high-speed Wi-Fi service based on the Starlink network.

“Partnering with Boeing to bring Starlink’s next-generation connectivity to our 787 fleet is a significant step in creating a ‘home away from home’ experience for every customer,” said Corneel Koster, Chief Customer and Operations Officer at Virgin Atlantic. “Together, we are transforming how our passengers stay connected in the air, with ultra-high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi that’s even better than what many enjoy on the ground. Flying with Virgin Atlantic will be even more enjoyable.”

New Technology for a Seamless Experience

As part of the project, Boeing will install a new Boeing Aerodynamic Shroud, specifically designed to integrate electronically steered array (ESA) antennas. This type of antenna will enable the aircraft to connect to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and multi-orbit connectivity systems, ensuring a continuous, high-performance connection throughout the flight.

Doug Backhus, Vice President of Cabin, Modifications and Maintenance for Boeing Global Services, highlighted the importance of the technological advancement accompanying this partnership: “We are witnessing rapid progress in satellite and antenna technology. We are proud to bring our engineering expertise and original manufacturer-backed hardware to help Virgin Atlantic deliver faster, more reliable connectivity across its 787 Dreamliner fleet.”

This initiative reinforces Virgin Atlantic’s strategy of differentiating itself through customer service, betting on innovation and onboard digital comfort. In this way, the airline aims to maintain its position as one of the most passenger-experience-focused carriers in the transatlantic market.
