Iberia Strengthens Its Leadership in Long-Haul with A321XLR: A Year of Efficiency and Transatlantic Expansion
Exactly one year ago, Iberia became the world’s first airline to operate the Airbus A321XLR, marking a turning point in transatlantic connectivity. On November 14, 2024, this aircraft model completed its first long-haul flight between Madrid and Boston, ushering in a new era characterized by greater efficiency, operational flexibility, and route expansion.
Efficiency and Comfort in a Single Aisle
The A321XLR has proven to be one of the most efficient aircraft on the market, with fuel savings of up to 40% compared to wide-body models. This advantage allows it to cover transatlantic routes with a single-aisle aircraft, without compromising the comfort standards that define Iberia’s long-haul fleet.
The aircraft features the Airspace cabin, equipped with larger overhead compartments, LED lighting, and a greater sense of space. It offers two classes — Business and Economy — with a total of 182 seats, providing a modern and functional onboard experience.
Route and Frequency Expansion in the Americas
Since its debut in Boston, the A321XLR has become a strategic pillar for Iberia. Thanks to its range and efficiency, the airline has increased frequencies and expanded its network on both sides of the Atlantic:
- Boston: Increased from one daily flight to two.
- Washington: Transitioned from a seasonal route to year-round operation.
- San Juan, Puerto Rico: Increased from one to two daily frequencies between Madrid and the Caribbean island.
Furthermore, the model will enable the addition of two new destinations in Brazil:
- Recife: With three weekly frequencies starting December 13.
- Fortaleza: Also with three weekly frequencies starting January 19.
This expansion not only opens new routes but also allows for more efficient fleet management, adapting capacity to the demand of each market and optimizing the use of wide-body aircraft in other operations.
Ramiro Sequeira, Iberia’s Production Director, highlighted: “The Airbus A321XLR has transformed our long-haul strategy, allowing us to open new destinations and increase frequencies with unprecedented efficiency. Its range and fuel savings offer us unique flexibility to adapt capacity to each market and optimize fleet utilization. All of this translates into more connection options and more convenient schedules for our customers, reinforcing our commitment to offering a competitive and high-quality experience.”
A Versatile and Growing Fleet
Iberia placed an order for eight A321XLR units in 2019. Currently, five are in service, and one more is expected to be added before the end of 2025. The final two will arrive in 2026, thus completing the planned fleet.
The combination of models — A350, A330, and A321XLR — allows the airline to adjust capacity according to demand, improve aircraft utilization, and offer more frequencies, which results in more convenient schedules and greater connection options.
The first anniversary of the A321XLR reaffirms Iberia’s commitment to an innovative, flexible, and sustainable growth model. With this aircraft, the company is expanding its network, connecting new destinations, and strengthening its presence in strategic markets, while maintaining its commitment to offering a competitive product and a quality experience.
