Air Canada Strengthens Global Network for Winter: Strategic Deployment of Airbus A321XLR and Key Expansion in Latin America
Air Canada has once again shifted key pieces within its international network. The Canadian flag carrier announced a strategic expansion of its Winter 2026-2027 schedule, combining new routes, increased frequencies, and a highly specific fleet deployment that clearly reveals its strategy for medium-to-long-haul connectivity across the hemisphere.
The announcement includes the addition of Quito, the consolidation of Europe as a year-round market, the reinforcement of Latin America, and the return of “sun routes” from Calgary. Far from a mere collection of isolated routes, this move reinforces Air Canada’s position as a global network operator supported by strong hubs and an increasingly specialized fleet.
Quito Joins the Network: A New Strategic Link with South America
The headline news is the launch of flights to Quito, Ecuador, which joins the Air Canada network for the first time. Operations will begin in early December 2026 and run through late March 2027.
The airline will operate:
- Three weekly frequencies from Montreal.
- One weekly frequency from Toronto.
All flights will be serviced by the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, featuring Signature Class, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins. This underscores a premium focus even in emerging markets. Strategically, these flights are designed to optimize connections at the Toronto and Montreal global hubs, facilitating traffic from Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Latin America: Increased Frequencies and Early Season Starts
Expansion into South America extends beyond Ecuador. Air Canada is moving up the start dates for several key routes and increasing frequencies in response to robust demand and cargo opportunities.
Key adjustments for the 2026-2027 winter season include:
- Toronto–Rio de Janeiro and Toronto–Lima: Resuming six weeks earlier than last season (October 24, 2026).
- Lima (from Toronto and Montreal): Increased from two to three weekly frequencies.
- Montreal–Santiago de Chile: Starting three weeks earlier (November 26, 2026) with growth to four weekly flights.
- Montreal–Bogotá: Increased from three to four weekly frequencies, operated by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a three-cabin configuration.
This growth consolidates Air Canada as one of the North American operators with the most extensive coverage in South America during the boreal winter.
Europe Transitions to Year-Round: Manchester and Copenhagen
In a significant strategic move, Manchester and Copenhagen will become year-round routes from Toronto starting in October 2026.
Both routes will be operated using the Airbus A321XLR, the airline’s new “workhorse” for lower-density transatlantic missions. Notably, this is Air Canada’s first narrow-body aircraft equipped with Signature Class and lie-flat seats, representing a major shift in the long-haul experience for single-aisle aircraft. This step is enabled by the new A321XLR base at Toronto-Pearson, complementing the previously announced base at Montreal-Trudeau.
Calgary Reclaims Prominence with Mexico
In the leisure segment, Air Canada is reactivating routes from Calgary to Mexico. Starting in December 2026, the airline will offer:
- Cancun: Four weekly flights.
- Puerto Vallarta: Three weekly flights.
Operations will be handled by Air Canada Rouge using the Boeing 737 MAX, featuring premium and economy cabins, free Wi-Fi for Aeroplan members, and enhanced catering. This return reflects an intent to retain Western Canadian traffic without forcing connections through Toronto or Vancouver.
