Iberia launched its new Madrid–Fortaleza route this Monday, adding its fourth destination in Brazil alongside São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Recife. The opening is not merely a geographic expansion: it represents another step in the airline’s strategy of using new-generation, high-efficiency aircraft to connect long-haul markets with growing demand.
The capital of the state of Ceará also becomes a new gateway to the Brazilian Northeast, a region that combines international tourist traffic with an increasingly relevant corporate flow.
Frequencies, Schedules, and Initial Operation
The route will begin with three weekly frequencies, operating on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Starting March 4, the schedule will be reinforced with a fourth frequency on Wednesdays, signaling an expectation of solid demand from the outset.

The flight departs Madrid at 12:00, arriving in Fortaleza at 16:50. The return takes off from Pinto Martins International Airport at 18:20, landing in the Spanish capital at 06:05 the following day.
The operation is carried out with the Airbus A321XLR, a narrow-body aircraft specifically designed for long-range missions, with an autonomy of up to 7,500 kilometers. This model has become a key asset for airlines looking to open point-to-point routes without the structural costs of a wide-body aircraft.
The aircraft is configured with 182 seats in two classes: Business and Economy, and features the Airspace cabin, designed to enhance the perception of comfort on longer flights.
With the opening of Fortaleza, Iberia strengthens its connectivity between Europe and the Brazilian Northeast, a region that historically has had fewer direct links with the Old Continent compared to the São Paulo–Rio de Janeiro axis.
