Winter conditions continue to significantly impact transportation across Europe. An intense cold wave, accompanied by heavy snowfall, is causing fresh disruptions to commercial aviation, with preemptive cancellations, congested airports, and thousands of passengers affected in several countries across the continent.
Flight Cancellations at Major European Airports
Airlines are preparing for further operational cancellations in the coming days. In France, Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed on Tuesday that airlines had been ordered to cancel at least 40% of scheduled departures from Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport the following morning. At Orly, the reduction reached approximately a quarter of the total planned flights.
The official also warned that the public transport system in the Paris region would likely suffer additional disruptions due to snow accumulation, complicating ground access to the terminals.
Schiphol, Epicenter of Air Travel Disruption
In the Netherlands, the situation is especially delicate. More than 400 flights were canceled on Tuesday at Schiphol Airport, one of the continent’s main connection hubs. Authorities advised travelers with canceled itineraries not to go to the facilities to avoid overcrowding.
“We haven’t experienced such extreme weather conditions in years,” stated Anoesjka Aspeslagh, a spokesperson for KLM, noting that the winter weather had paralyzed activity at the airfield for a fifth consecutive day. The airline indicated it offers alternative options when possible, though it acknowledged being overwhelmed by the volume of inquiries received.
Extreme Weather Conditions in Several Countries
The winter episode extends beyond France and the Netherlands. In Germany, temperatures dropped below -10 degrees Celsius in the south and east on Tuesday morning, while much of the country was covered in snow.
In the United Kingdom, the Met Office warned that winter-related risks could persist throughout the week across most of the country. In Marham, Norfolk, in eastern England, thermometers read -12.5 degrees Celsius overnight, the lowest figure recorded so far this season.
The situation is also affecting the Western Balkans, where heavy snowfall and rain have caused road closures and power outages.

With forecasts for more snow and intense cold, the European air sector faces a complex scenario in the midst of the winter season. Airlines, airports, and passengers continue to adapt to an operational environment marked by weather uncertainty and the need for preventive measures to ensure safety.
