Summer 2026 will mark a turning point for Chicago O’Hare International Airport, as United Airlines reaches up to 750 daily flights—the largest schedule ever operated by an airline at this airport and an advantage of 200 daily flights over its closest competitor, American Airlines.
This announcement not only solidifies Chicago as the operational heart of United but also redefines the strategic weight of O’Hare as the Midwest’s premier hub and a global gateway.
A Record-Breaking Hub: More Destinations, More Frequencies, and Greater Global Reach
Throughout 2026, United will offer nonstop flights from O’Hare to 222 destinations—the highest number among all airlines operating at the airport. This figure becomes even more striking when compared to the competition: 38 more destinations than American Airlines.
The network will be divided into:
- 175 domestic destinations within the United States
- 47 international cities across Europe, Asia, and South America
This growth will position the Chicago hub as the third-largest connection center for any airline in the United States, backed by record passenger levels achieved in 2025.
Strengthening the Midwest: New Regional Routes Starting April and May 2026
One of the most relevant pillars of the plan is strengthening regional connectivity. Beginning in late April and early May 2026, United will introduce five new routes from O’Hare, all with four daily frequencies, targeting small and mid-sized markets in the Midwest:
- Champaign/Urbana, Illinois — starting April 30, 2026
- Kalamazoo, Michigan — starting April 30, 2026
- Lansing, Michigan — starting May 7, 2026
- La Crosse, Wisconsin — starting May 7, 2026
- Bloomington/Normal, Illinois — starting May 7, 2026

These routes are in addition to others already announced in late 2025 for summer 2026, which include destinations such as Santa Barbara, Monterey, Eugene, Bristol/Tri-Cities, Erie, Rochester (MN), Wausau, and Marquette, among others.
Increased Frequencies in Key Markets and a Focus on Connectivity
Beyond launching new routes, United will increase frequencies to more than 80 cities, reinforcing strategic markets from Chicago like Boston, Nashville, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Dallas.
This capacity increase is also reflected in mainline fleet usage: during the summer, the airline will operate over 370 daily departures with mainline aircraft, representing a 20% increase compared to summer 2025.
Guadalajara and the International Events Factor
As part of a targeted yet significant strategy, United will operate daily flights between Chicago and Guadalajara from June 8 to 27, in support of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With this addition, the airline will offer nonstop flights from Chicago to all 16 host cities of the event—a move that reinforces the hub’s commercial flexibility.
Operations and Punctuality: A Key Argument Against American Airlines
This growth comes alongside solid operational results. In 2025, United led among major airlines in on-time arrivals at O’Hare.
Some key operational data from 2025:
- 541 average daily departures from O’Hare
- 31% more flights than American Airlines
- Highest number of seats offered from Chicago in the last 20 years
Investment in People and Passenger Experience
To support this expansion, United plans to hire approximately 2,500 additional employees at O’Hare before year-end, expanding a workforce that already exceeds 18,000 workers in Chicago.
On the product front, passengers will find:
- Five United Club lounges
- A redesigned United Polaris Lounge
- More aircraft with personal seatback screens, larger overhead bins, Bluetooth, and free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members
Omar Idris, United’s Vice President at O’Hare, emphasized that this expansion is the result of a more than decade-long strategy focused on attracting and retaining high-value customers, with Chicago as the clearest example of this commitment.
With 750 daily flights, an unprecedented network, and operations backed by punctuality and capacity metrics, United Airlines is not only preparing for the most ambitious summer in its history at Chicago O’Hare—it is redefining the airport’s role as one of the most important nodes in commercial aviation in the United States and globally.
