Lufthansa Unveils Airbus A380 with Special Livery to Celebrate Centenary
Lufthansa has introduced an Airbus A380 featuring a special design to commemorate the airline’s 100th anniversary.
A Giant of the Skies for a Historic Celebration
The Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, landed this Wednesday at Munich Airport under flight number LH9901, sporting a special livery. The aircraft, registered as D-AIMH, returned from Shannon, Ireland, following an exhaustive painting process that lasted 34 days.
This design is characterized by a massive graphic of the airline’s iconic symbol, stretching 47 meters in length. It is accompanied by the commemorative inscriptions “1926 | 2026” and “100.”
Technical Details of the Painting Process
The transformation of this giant of the skies required precision logistics:
- Manpower: A team of 35 specialists worked on the project.
- Surface Area: A total area exceeding 4,000 square meters was painted, equivalent to approximately 16 tennis courts.
- Entry into Service: The aircraft is expected to begin regular operations with this new image in March.

An Expanding Commemorative Fleet
The A380 is the fourth aircraft in the company to adopt these special centenary colors. Lufthansa plans for a total of seven aircraft to wear this special livery to honor the creation of the original “Luft Hansa.”
Currently, the commemorative fleet includes:
- Airbus A350-900: Based in Munich.
- Boeing 787-9: Based in Frankfurt.
- Airbus A320neo: Based in Frankfurt.
- Airbus A380: The recently unveiled model.
A second Airbus A320neo in Munich will join shortly, followed by a Boeing 747-8 and an Airbus A350-1000 in the coming weeks.
Cost Strategy and Visual Sustainability
Lufthansa has integrated this branding change strategically to minimize financial impact. The special design is applied through two methods:
- Regular Repainting: Taking advantage of the aircraft’s scheduled maintenance cycles.
- New Deliveries: Applying the livery directly as the initial factory paint.
This approach ensures that the anniversary fleet maintains an extraordinary appearance with minimal additional costs for the airline during its centenary year.
