TAP Air Portugal has announced the opening of a new international route between Lisbon and São Luís, the capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão. This move deepens its growth strategy in Brazil and solidifies its leadership as the European airline with the largest presence in the country.

Operations are set to begin on October 26, 2026, featuring two weekly frequencies that will directly connect Northeast Brazil with the company’s primary hub in Lisbon.

A Strategic Addition to TAP’s Brazilian Portfolio

Beyond a simple destination expansion, this decision reflects a strategic market analysis: ethnic demand, emerging tourism, and regional connectivity powered by next-generation aircraft.

Network Expansion: With the addition of São Luís, TAP now serves 15 Brazilian cities with direct flights.

Strategic Choice: Maranhão is a state with growing international tourism appeal and untapped potential for long-haul connectivity.

Regional Focus: This route extends TAP’s reach into the Brazilian Northeast, a region historically resilient in leisure and VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) demand.

Operations: Airbus A321LR as a Key Enabler

The Airbus A321LR is central to this long-range strategy. It allows the airline to open “long-thin” markets—long-haul routes with moderate demand—without the financial risk of wide-body aircraft.

Strategic Leadership Perspectives

From a local institutional perspective, Carlos Brandão, the Governor of Maranhão, emphasized the economic impact, stating that the flight shortens the distance to Europe and elevates the state’s international profile, promoting its culture and gastronomy as key assets.
