Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline on the African continent, has taken a strategic step in modernizing its cargo division by signing lease agreements with AerCap Holdings for the addition of two Boeing 777-300ERSF converted aircraft, strengthening its regional and global logistics capabilities.
A Milestone for African Aviation: Arrival of “The Big Twin”
The incorporation of these two Boeing 777-300ERSFs, popularly known in the industry as “The Big Twin,” marks a historical precedent as Ethiopian becomes the first operator of this model on the African continent. Under the terms of the agreement, deliveries of these aircraft are scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.
This transaction not only reinforces the company’s fleet but also consolidates the long-term relationship between the airline and the aircraft leasing giant, AerCap.

- Sustainability: It represents a modern and sustainable solution to meet the growing demand for air freight.
Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, highlighted that these aircraft will significantly improve the efficiency of the cargo network, boosting trade in the region and consolidating its position in the global market.
For his part, Aengus Kelly, CEO of AerCap, expressed pride in supporting the airline’s growth: “With 25% more capacity than today’s smaller long-range twin-engine freighters, the 777-300ERSF offers significant cost efficiencies and will position Ethiopian Airlines to further expand its growing cargo platform.”
