Lufthansa has included its iconic Boeing 747-8 in its centennial celebrations, decorating the “Queen of the Skies” with the special anniversary design. This aircraft becomes the sixth in the fleet to sport this commemorative livery as it prepares to resume transatlantic operations.

An International Transformation Process

The aircraft, registered as D-ABYN and named “Niedersachsen,” received its new look at the facilities in San Bernardino, California, in the United States (U.S.).

After completing the paintwork, the “Jumbo” began its journey back home under flight number LH9913. It is expected to land at Frankfurt Airport this Thursday, March 5, at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time. For the delight of aviation enthusiasts, the airline has planned for the landing to take place on the airport’s center runway, ensuring optimal visibility of the new “XXL” branding.

Centennial Fleet Takes Shape

With the addition of the Boeing 747-8, Lufthansa now has six aircraft featuring the “100 years” design. The company’s strategy has been to distribute this imagery across various models within its short-haul and long-haul fleets:

Current fleet with special livery:

  • Boeing 747-8 (the most recent addition).
  • Airbus A380 and Airbus A320neo.
  • Airbus A350.
  • Boeing 787-9.
  • A second Airbus A320neo.

Next Steps and Fleet Expansion

The Jumbo will lose no time after its arrival in Germany. It is scheduled to enter regular commercial service on March 6, performing a flight to Los Angeles (LAX).

The commemorative project will formally conclude in the fall of 2026. At that time, an Airbus A350-1000 will receive the special design, becoming the seventh and final aircraft to complete the airline’s official 100th-anniversary fleet.
