Peru Boosts Modernization of Five Southern Airports with US$470 Million Investment
The Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has formalized Amendment No. 5 to the concession contract for the Second Group of Airports, securing an investment exceeding US$470 million. This strategic agreement will transform the infrastructure of five key terminals in the south of the country, optimizing connectivity and operational safety between 2026 and 2028.
A Strategic Agreement for Regional Development
The signing of this amendment represents a milestone for Peruvian aviation infrastructure. The document was executed by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto Barrera, and the General Manager of Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú (AAP), Alberto Huby.
According to Minister Prieto Barrera, this initiative is a concrete sign of political will to unblock critical projects and launch investments required for the country’s sustained growth, even during transition periods.
Technical Scope and Beneficiary Terminals
The modernization and technical intervention plan will focus on five strategic airports that serve as engines for tourism and commerce in the southern region:
- Arequipa Airport
- Juliaca Airport
- Tacna Airport
- Puerto Maldonado Airport
- Ayacucho Airport
Primary Infrastructure Interventions
The MTC has detailed that the works under this amendment are not limited to terminal aesthetics but address critical components of operational safety:
- Airside: Comprehensive rehabilitation of runway and apron pavements.
- Passenger Terminals: Optimization and modernization of processing areas to enhance service quality.
- Security and Perimeters: Construction of perimeter fencing to guarantee facility security.
- Hydraulic Works: Implementation of drainage systems to ensure operational continuity during adverse weather events.
Projected Impact: 4.2 Million Annual Passengers
The execution of these investments, scheduled for the 2026-2028 period, will have a direct impact on regional competitiveness. It is estimated that the improvements will benefit over 3.6 million residents and facilitate the transit of approximately 4.2 million passengers per year.
The modernization of these assets ensures that airport infrastructure keeps pace with the sustained growth of air transport demand in Peru. By strengthening connectivity, territorial integration is facilitated, and vital sectors such as foreign trade and receptive tourism are energized.
