SAS Celebrates 80 Years of History with a Special Livery
Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has kicked off its 80th-anniversary celebrations by unveiling an Airbus A330-300 featuring a commemorative design.
Eight Decades Connecting Scandinavia with the World
The airline is marking this historic milestone by honoring its first intercontinental flight, which took place on September 17, 1946. On that occasion, a route from Stockholm to New York bridged the gap between the Nordic region and the American continent. Throughout 2026, SAS will highlight its heritage and its pivotal role in connecting people, businesses, and societies.
Currently, the carrier utilizes Copenhagen as its primary international gateway, linking Scandinavia with key destinations across Europe, North America, and Asia.

A Design Merging Tradition and Modernity
To commemorate this anniversary, the airline introduced a dedicated livery on one of its Airbus A330-300s. The design stands out through several key visual elements:
- Corporate Color: For the first time, the airline’s signature blue color covers the entire aircraft.
- Historical Reference: The Scandinavian flag has been reinterpreted as a nod to the classic livery used during the 1980s.
- New Symbolism: A new anniversary logo has been included, inspired by the contours of aircraft engines and the fuselage.
Capacity and Long-Haul Fleet
The selected aircraft is part of the company’s long-haul fleet, which consists of:
- Eight Airbus A330-300s, each featuring a 266-seat configuration.
- Next-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A350.
- Airbus A321LR (Long Range) units, which strengthen the intercontinental network.
Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS, emphasized the significance of this anniversary, noting that the airline has driven innovation and operational safety for 80 years. According to the executive, while the network has expanded from that first transatlantic flight to today’s global reach, the company’s purpose of serving its customers and societies remains unchanged.
The inaugural flight of this commemorative aircraft is scheduled between Copenhagen and New York. The choice of this route is intentional, as it seeks to emulate the historic flight path that defined the airline’s early international expansion in 1946.
