Tunisia to Invest $1 Billion to Quadruple Main Airport Capacity

The Tunisian Ministry of Transport announced this Sunday an ambitious expansion plan for its primary air terminal, Tunis-Carthage International Airport. With an estimated investment of 3 billion dinars (approximately $1 billion), the project aims to modernize the country’s air transport infrastructure and significantly increase its operational capacity.

Strategic Expansion of Aviation Infrastructure

The central objective of this investment is to raise the airport’s capacity from its current 5 million annual passengers to 18.5 million by the year 2031. This expansion has been formally integrated into the 2026 investment budget of the Civil Aviation and Airports Authority (OACA).

Master Plan Shift: Expansion Over New Construction

In a key strategic decision, the Tunisian government has decided to abandon, for the time being, plans to construct an entirely new airport. Instead, the Ministry of Transport has opted to concentrate resources and efforts on the expansion and modernization of existing facilities at Tunis-Carthage.

This measure represents a pivot in the country’s infrastructure policy, prioritizing the optimization of a consolidated asset to meet the projected demand of the next decade. The reinforcement of Tunis-Carthage is emerging as the fundamental pillar for the development of the Tunisian aviation sector, ensuring that the capital possesses competitive infrastructure capable of managing the massive flow of international travelers expected in the coming years.
