American Airlines has announced an update to its checked baggage fees and a deeper differentiation of its Basic Economy fare compared to the standard Main Cabin. These adjustments, which will take effect in stages starting in April 2026, respond to an ongoing price evaluation within the industry’s current operating environment.

New Cost Structure for Checked Baggage

The airline has modified pricing for the first, second, and third checked bags on domestic flights—including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands—as well as Canada and short-haul international flights.

For tickets purchased on or after April 9, 2026, the applicable airport rates will be:

First bag: $50.
Second bag: $60.
Third bag: $200.

Digital Incentive: Passengers who choose to prepay for their luggage via the aa.com platform or the airline’s mobile app will receive a $5 discount, reducing the cost to $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second.

Specific Rates for Basic Economy

Travelers using the Basic Economy fare will face differentiated charges depending on the market and the date of purchase:

Domestic, Mexico, Caribbean, and Central America: For tickets purchased from May 18, the cost will be $55 for the first bag at the airport ($50 prepaid) and $65 for the second ($60 prepaid).
South America: In select markets, the first bag will cost $70 for tickets issued from April 9.
Other regional markets will join this scheme starting May 18.
Andean Region (Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru): As of May 18, the fee will be $70 for the first bag and $100 for the second. In these specific markets, the prepayment option will not be available.

Strategic Changes to the Basic Economy Experience

With the goal of clearly differentiating its products, American Airlines will implement additional restrictions for Basic Economy passengers starting May 18, 2026.

Benefit and Upgrade Restrictions

Even members with status within the AAdvantage loyalty program will see changes to their benefits when traveling on Basic Economy fares:

Seats and Upgrades: All customers will be able to select a seat by paying a fee, but they will not be eligible for complimentary upgrades or the use of “systemwide” certificates.
Boarding Priority: By the end of this year, AAdvantage members without status or co-branded credit cards will board in Group 7. Members with status and credit card holders will maintain their priority or preferred boarding.

Maintained Benefits

Despite the restrictions, the Basic Economy fare will continue to offer:

One personal item and one carry-on bag at no cost.
Snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and in-flight entertainment.

Exemptions and Loyalty Policy

American Airlines maintains certain privileges for its most loyal customers and specific personnel. AAdvantage status members will continue to receive complimentary checked baggage on all flights. Likewise, most AAdvantage credit card holders maintain the benefit of the first bag free on domestic itineraries.

Other categories that retain the free baggage benefit include:

Passengers in Premium cabins (domestic and international).
U.S. military personnel on active duty on all company flights.
AAdvantage members in Main Cabin, who maintain access to seat selection and complimentary upgrades according to their status.
