The Civil Aeronautics Administration of Colombia (Aerocivil) has confirmed a trajectory of sustained growth in the sector following the release of the official balance for the first quarter of 2026. Between January and March, the aviation market moved 15 million passengers, representing an 8.7% expansion compared to the same period last year, marking a robust start to the year for the industry.

Passenger Traffic Momentum

The month of March 2026 served as a key catalyst for these results, seeing the mobilization of 4.9 million travelers. This figure represents a 9.9% increase (an additional 451,000 people) compared to March 2025, demonstrating that demand remains steady due to a stable tourism sector and improved connectivity.

Domestic Market: Regional Impulse

On the domestic front, traffic reached 8.5 million passengers during the quarter, reflecting an 8.6% increase. The report highlights the performance of major hubs and emerging destinations:

  • Primary Hubs: Cali, Medellín, and Barranquilla maintained consistent traffic flows.
  • Standout Destinations: Montería and Popayán showed notable growth. In the case of Popayán, the surge was closely linked to tourist inflow during the vacation season.

International Connectivity on the Rise

The international segment continues to gain ground with a quarterly total of 6.5 million passengers, equivalent to a 8.9% positive variance. In March alone, 2.15 million people traveled on outbound routes (+10.6%).

The most dynamic traffic flows were concentrated in strategic markets within the region and the Caribbean, specifically routes to:

  • Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
  • Argentina.
  • Guatemala and El Salvador.
  • The Dutch Antilles.

Strengthening Air Freight and Mail Operations

The air logistics sector also reported positive indicators, moving a total of 244,000 tons in the first quarter—an accumulated growth of 4.7%.

  • International Cargo: Accounted for the bulk of operations with 209,000 tons during the quarter. This volume was primarily driven by the e-commerce boom on long-haul routes and the strengthening of regional logistical connections.
  • Domestic Cargo: Recorded 35,000 tons in the quarter (+4.4%). However, March showed an exceptional 9.6% spike, bolstered by merchandise distribution across trunk and regional routes.

Colombia as a Strategic Regional Hub

The operational results of the first quarter of 2026 confirm that demand—for both passengers and cargo—rests on a solid foundation supported by infrastructure that adapts to global market needs.

Aerocivil has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening operational safety and modernizing airport facilities. The ultimate goal is to consolidate Colombia’s position not only as a top-tier tourist destination but as a fundamental strategic transport and logistics hub in the Latin American region.
