Delta Air Lines is transforming the passenger experience by implementing innovative technologies and strategic partnerships aimed at making international connections more fluid and predictable. Through the expansion of baggage transfer programs and the use of biometric identity, the airline is successfully returning up to 25 minutes of valuable time to its customers during their journeys.

Optimizing International Connections: Seamless Baggage Transfer

The airline has strengthened its Seamless Baggage Transfer (SBT) program, an initiative that simplifies the transit of international passengers within U.S. territory.

New Routes and Benefits

Currently, customers traveling from Incheon International Airport (ICN) in Seoul, South Korea, to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) or Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) can proceed directly to their departure gate after passing through U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) checkpoints and security.

  • No Baggage Claim: Passengers no longer need to claim and re-check their bags unless specifically referred by the CBP for additional inspection.
  • Future Expansion: By the end of this year, this benefit will extend to flights from ICN to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), operated by Delta and Korean Air, as well as routes to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) operated by Korean Air.

Biometric Technology with TSA PreCheck Touchless ID

The contact-free identity verification system, known as TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, is already operational at more than 60 airports, including all of Delta’s primary hubs. This technology utilizes secure biometric verification to reduce touchpoints and expedite wait times at both baggage drop-off and security checkpoints.

Eligibility Requirements

To access this service, passengers must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an active member of the SkyMiles loyalty program.
  • Be enrolled in TSA PreCheck and possess a Known Traveler Number (KTN).
  • Hold a valid and current passport.

Users can now activate this feature directly through the Fly Delta app, eliminating the need to access the official website and allowing them to save their preferences for future travel with ease.

Digitalization and Self-Management via Mobile App

Delta has introduced significant enhancements to its digital ecosystem to reduce friction from the moment a passenger arrives at the airport until they reach the boarding gate.

  • App Bag Drop: Available at all hubs, this service rewards those who perform a digital check-in before arriving at the terminal, significantly accelerating the luggage drop-off process.
  • Residency Verification: Holders of U.S. or Canadian permanent residency cards traveling to or through these countries can scan their documents directly within the app. Much like the passport scanning feature, this function eliminates manual data entry and allows passengers to bypass traditional lobby queues.

Strategic Partnership with Uber: Preferred Drop-Off

The collaboration between Delta and Uber continues to deepen, addressing critical pain points in ground transportation. The Delta x Uber Preferred Drop-Off service helps reduce curbside congestion at terminals and simplifies passenger arrivals.

Since its initial implementation at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and subsequent expansion to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), thousands of customers utilize this option weekly by selecting it directly within the Uber app. Users are encouraged to follow airport signage to confirm the exact location of the preferential drop-off points.

These innovations underscore Delta Air Lines’ commitment to integrating digital and operational solutions that prioritize traveler convenience and operational efficiency.
