Low-cost carrier Scoot has been named the world’s most emissions-efficient airline, overtaking Wizz Air, while Qatar Airways and Ryanair stand out as global leaders based on their operational capacity. Cirium’s EmeraldSky 2025 report reveals that fleet renewal and seat density are the critical factors in reducing the environmental impact of aviation.
Scoot Reaches the Pinnacle of Global Efficiency
For the first time, a Southeast Asian carrier leads Cirium’s efficiency rankings. Singapore-based Scoot secured the top spot thanks to an operational strategy that combines high seat density (averaging 242 seats per aircraft) with long-haul operations.
With an average fleet age of 6.7 years and an average of 51 grams of CO₂ per Available Seat Kilometer (ASK), Scoot outperformed Wizz Air, which led the rankings the previous year. According to Jeremy Bowen, CEO of Cirium, these results demonstrate that emissions efficiency is directly linked to decisions within an airline’s control: fleet selection, seating configuration, and route deployment.
Global Top 5: Dominance of Low-Cost Carriers
Analysis of the world’s 100 largest airlines shows a clear pattern: companies with young fleets and high-density configurations dominate efficiency levels. The five airlines that achieved “Gold” status for their global performance are:
- Scoot (Singapore)
- Wizz Air (Hungary)
- TUI Airways (United Kingdom)
- Air Europa (Spain)
- Frontier Airlines (United States)

Global Leaders by Available Seat Kilometers (ASK)
When the ranking is adjusted to measure industry giants by their total capacity in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK), the results highlight operators that manage to balance massive scale with competitive efficiency.
| Rank | Airline | Base Country | PAX CO₂/ASK (g) | CO₂ Emissions (mt) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Qatar Airways | Qatar | 60.0 | 15.4 |
| 2 | Ryanair | Ireland | 62.7 | 17.4 |
| 3 | Turkish Airlines | Türkiye | 64.2 | 15.8 |
Regional Performance and Key Routes
The report also breaks down performance by geographic markets and high-traffic international corridors, such as the Transatlantic and Transpacific routes.
Latin America and North America
In Latin America, JetSmart positions itself as the most efficient with 57.9 g of CO₂/ASK, followed by Mexican carriers Volaris and VivaAerobus. In North America, Frontier Airlines leads the domestic market with a young fleet averaging just 4.8 years.
Transoceanic Routes
- Transatlantic: Virgin Atlantic takes the top spot, proving that new-generation widebody aircraft can deliver highly competitive emissions performance on long-haul routes.
- Transpacific: Air Canada leads this corridor, followed by Delta Air Lines and Cathay Pacific.
Emissions Reduction Through Fleet Modernization
One of the most significant findings of the EmeraldSky 2025 report is the ability of some airlines to grow capacity without proportionally increasing their emissions.
Korean Air recorded the greatest improvements in long-haul routes globally. By replacing older aircraft like the Boeing 777-300ER with next-generation models such as the Boeing 787-9/10 on the Seoul – Seattle route, the airline achieved a 27.4% improvement in emissions per ASK in a single year.
This impact was also observed at American Airlines, which improved its efficiency by 20.4% on the New York (JFK) – New Delhi route by switching from the Boeing 777-300ER to the 787-9.
“When airlines swap out older widebody planes for next-generation aircraft, emissions per seat kilometer can drop by up to 27%. This isn’t theoretical; we are measuring it with real operational data,” stated Jeremy Bowen.
The 2025 results reinforce that sustainability in modern aviation depends on investment in fleet technology and cabin space optimization. While low-cost carriers continue to set the pace, long-haul operators are closing the gap through the aggressive retirement of less efficient aircraft.
