Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines have formalized an order for six 787 Dreamliner aircraft, exercising purchase rights from their landmark 2023 agreement.
Strengthening the Intercontinental Network from Addis Ababa
The conversion of these options into firm orders represents a key step in Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable growth strategy. The airline will deploy these new Boeing 787-9s to bolster operations from its primary hub at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.
The integration of these ultra-modern aircraft focuses on three primary objectives:
- Route Expansion: Increasing presence in high-demand destinations across Europe, Asia, and North America.
- Increased Cargo Capacity: Leveraging the Dreamliner’s belly-hold capacity to serve major global trade corridors.
- Operational Efficiency: Reducing fuel consumption and improving profitability on long-haul sectors.

Operational Versatility and Sustainability
The Boeing 787-9 is distinguished by its versatility, allowing the airline to efficiently transport both passengers and freight. Its advanced design contributes to a significant reduction in fuel burn, aligning with the aviation industry’s sustainability goals and optimizing costs on long-distance routes.
Leading the African Market with Dreamliner Technology
With this new order, Ethiopian Airlines reaffirms its position as Africa’s largest operator of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, currently flying both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants.
Mr. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, emphasized that this order is a proud moment that demonstrates the company’s readiness to achieve new milestones. According to Tasew, the B787-9 fleet allows the carrier to maintain operational excellence while offering a superior level of passenger comfort.
For his part, Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, noted that the Dreamliner will remain the backbone of the airline’s fleet as it continues to modernize operations and open new point-to-point routes across the continent.
This move ensures that Ethiopian Airlines possesses the necessary capacity to meet the growing demand for international travel, consolidating its role as the primary connector between Africa and the rest of the world.
